Bioengineering projects

In some cases the application of soil bioengineering techniques is necessary.

They provide additional stabilization of soil surfaces, until the growth of the permanent vegetation or the plant material which has been used.

Such structures are:

  • Brushlayering
  • Live fascines
  • Wooden logs
  • Log crib walls
  • Vegetated gabions
  • Coir logs

Advantages of Bioengineering:

  • Ecological Improvement
  • Improvement the appearance of the landscape
  • Use of natural materials with environmental compatibility
  • Protection against erosion
  • Creation of appropriate vegetation for the area
  • Enhancement of soil conditions
  • Adjustment of the soil moisture by creating better drainage conditions
  • Reduction of the water flow velocity, high retention rates of the precipitation, the canopy of plants
  • Increase over time of the stability and efficiency which can be sustainable.
  • Very cost – effective

VEGETATED GABION WALLS

Vegetated gabions are placed or stacked up against cut or fill slopes, concrete or shotcrete walls, tunnel portal slopes, e.t.c. as soil retaining walls permitting the restoration of the natural environment.

The gabion baskets are prefabricated. They are made of square mesh which is shaped in cages and lined with geotextiles. They are filled with soil, which contains a mixture of seeds and fertilizers and are placed on a suitable foundation in front of the existing slope or concrete construction.
